, This research work focuses on the development of high-performance capillary pumps
for low-cost point-of-care diagnostic devices using printed circuit board (PCB) technology.
The study explores the design and fabrication of capillary pumps using PCBs and
polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to create microfluidic devices. Two different designs of PCBbased micropumps with hexagonal-shaped micropillars are proposed, offering different
vertical distances between rows to achieve varying flow rates and fluid volumes. The
fabrication process involves designing the PCB microchannel, cutting the PCB fiber sheet,
creating silicon molds, pouring and curing PDMS, bonding the PDMS replicas to a substrate,
and testing the micropump's performance. Experimental setups are established to measure the
flow rate and pressure drop of different glycerin ratios in the microfluidic system. The results
indicate that as the glycerin content increases, the flow rate decreases due to increased fluid
viscosity. Design 1 consistently exhibits higher flow rates than Design 2 due to the smaller
gap distance between micropillars. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of PCB-based
capillary pumps in controlling fluid flow and offer valuable insights for the development of
low-cost point-of-care diagnostic devices. The design of micropumps for studying blood flow
at low flow rates offers significant advantages in investigating blood-related conditions. The
precise control overflow rates, realistic simulations, integration with microfluidic systems,
drug delivery studies, and reduced sample requirements all contribute to a deeper
understanding of blood disorders and the development of personalized treatment approaches.

, This thesis explores the relationship between the positioning of components during 3D
printing and the resulting mechanical and microstructural characteristics of SS-316L
alloy, both in its untreated and heat-treated states. Specifically, the study focuses on
additive technology implemented at two distinct locations: the stitching line and the
center of the print bed using the FS421M additive metal melting system. The current
body of literature on the mechanical properties of SS-316L lacks sufficient research on
the linked effects of component placement and heat treatment. To address this gap, the
authors conducted a comprehensive investigation, presenting original findings. SS-316L
is commonly used in applications requiring exceptional resistance to corrosion and high
temperatures, and its reduced carbon content enhances resistance to inter-granular
corrosion. For evaluating the mechanical properties uniaxial tensile tests and Vickers
Hardness tests were conducted at the authors' university. Statistical analysis encompassed
factors such as print direction, heat treatment, stress relieving, ultimate tensile strength,
yield strength, and specified values. The fracture surfaces were scrutinized using scanning
electron microscopy and digital microscopy. The results demonstrate that mechanical
properties were affected by the orientation and placement of the samples on the print bed,
even when subjected to identical heat treatments. In conclusion, this research highlights
the interrelation between part placement in 3D printing and the resulting mechanical and
microstructural properties of SS-316L enabling improved practices in additive
manufacturing applications.

	   <p>By Idrees, Hassaan.

                        . 46p.
, This study presents a numerical investigation of the flow characteristics around a single and
double-slotted cylinder using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The simulations were
conducted using CFD software OpenFOAM on a structured grid. The governing equations for
incompressible, laminar flow were solved using the SIMPLE FOAM solver. A mesh-independent
study led to a structured grid with 0.7m cells which was sufficient to capture the flow features
accurately. The results show that the addition of double slits to the cylinder significantly reduces
the drag coefficient as compared to a normal cylinder. The reduction in drag coefficient was
observed to be more significant for wider slits, with a maximum reduction of 22% observed for a
gap between slits and a width-to-diameter ratio of 0.1. The streamlines and pressure contours for
the double-slotted cylinder show a distinct change in the flow pattern due to the presence of the
slits. The flow around the slotted cylinder is observed to be more streamlined with less vortex
shedding as compared to the no-slit cylinder. Additionally, the slits help in reducing the size of the
wake region behind the cylinder, resulting in a reduction of pressure drag. The effect of the
Reynolds number on the flow characteristics was also studied. It was observed that the increase in
Reynolds number resulted in a decrease in drag coefficient for each set of cases, similar to that of
a no-slit and single-slotted cylinder. The results of this study suggest that the presence of double
slits can significantly alter the flow characteristics of a cylinder and improve its aerodynamic
performance, especially in laminar conditions. The findings of this study can have potential
applications in various fields, including aerospace, wind energy, and marine engineering

, In this study, the effect of cork particles on the failure behavior of SLJs was investigated
experimentally through tensile testing and non-contact digital image correlation (DIC) methods.
Cork particles within size range of 125-250 μm were added at 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0% wt. in
a brittle epoxy. SLJs with and without cork particles were tested under a displacement control
condition of 1.3 mm/min and digital images were captured during the deformation in order to
analyze the fracture process. VIC 2D 7 software was used to determine the peel and shear strain
distributions in the overlapped area of bonded joints. Tensile test and DIC results reveal that cork
particles enhance the strength and ductility of adhesive joints. However, the effect of cork particles
on ductility is more significant than strength of joint. The visual inspection of the captured images
shows cork particles act as crack stopper and slow down the crack propagation along the bondline.

	   <p>By Iqbal, Junaid .

                        . 63p.
, The aim of this study was to explore the use of data-driven approaches for designing net zero
energy buildings using bifacial solar panels and deep learning models. The study utilized
historical data on solar irradiance to forecast future irradiation levels, which were then used to
optimize the tilt angle of bifacial solar panels for maximum energy collection. Two deep learning
models, namely RNN-LSTM and transformers, were evaluated using various evaluation metrics,
including MAE, RMSE, SMAPE, and R2. The results showed that both models were effective in
forecasting irradiations with varying forecasting horizons, with the transformers model
outperforming the RNN-LSTM model in terms of MAE values. The study provides insights into
the use of data-driven approaches for designing net zero energy buildings, highlighting the
potential of deep learning models in optimizing the use of renewable energy sources for
sustainable development. The results show that both models were effective in forecasting
irradiance, with R2 values of 0.927 for RNN-LSTM and 0.894 for Transformers. Additionally,
the Transformers model outperformed the RNN-LSTM model with a lower range of MAE values
from 0.05 to 0.03 across the same horizons. These findings suggest that deep learning models
can effectively forecast solar irradiance and aid in optimizing the performance of net-zero energy
buildings.

, In this thesis, we explore the fluid flow and heat transfer in thin liquid films over an
unsteady stretching surface with viscous dissipation under the influence of an external
magnetic field. To investigate the behavior of this system, we use similarity
transformations with the analytical and numerical solution techniques. Specifically, we
derive the Lie point symmetries of the system of partial differential equations that describes
the flow and heat transfer in a thin liquid layer. A 5-dimensional Lie point symmetry
algebra is derived. We develop new similarity transformations for the given model using a
pair of the admitted Lie point symmetry generators. Arbitrary coefficients are used in the
Lie optimal system and these arbitrary coefficients may be employe to the control the flow
and heat transfer.
By constructing the optimum system of Lie sub-algebras, related invariants, and similarity
transformations, we reduce the number of independent variables in this flow model and
convert the partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations for simplifying
the solution procedure. This conversion requires double reduction, and the resulting
transformations allow us to reduce the model to nonlinear ordinary differential equations.
To examine the proposed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow and heat transfer, we build
analytic solutions for the obtained system of ordinary differential equations using the
Homotopy analysis approach. The results are presented in the form of tables and figures,
which demonstrate how the magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, Eckert number, and
unsteadiness parameter affect fluid velocity, film thickness, and heat transfer. We compare
these changes in velocity and temperature profiles with those previously reported for flow
and heat transfer inside a thin film under the influence of viscous dissipation and an
external magnetic field.
Overall, our findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of fluid flow and heat
transfer in thin films over unsteady stretching surfaces with viscous dissipation and
external magnetic fields. These insights have important practical applications in fields such
as chemical engineering, material sciences, and energy transf

, In recent times, automobile scientists have focused a lot upon the
fuel economy and energy conservation in motor vehicles. The
search for alternate fuels and the minimization of thermal and
mechanical losses in motor engines has been a major topic of
research for the past several decades. In an automobile, one of the
most complicated systems in terms of mechanical losses is the
engine valve train. Several theoretical and experimental models
have been used to calculate the losses in engine valve train and
the effect of various engine parameters on the frictional losses.
The work presented in this article focuses upon the drive and
friction torque values for four different commercially available
oils of the same grade i.e., 10W-40. These oils are Shell, Castrol,
Kixx and ZIC. The tests are carried out on a Suzuki swift RS413
gasoline engine cylinder head. The variation in drive and friction
torques with oil temperature and camshaft speed is presented. The
results show the comparisons of these four oils for the drive and
friction torque values and based on these results, conclusions are
given regarding the best oil in terms of friction performance of
the given engine valve train. It is thus concluded in this thesis that
Kixx is the oil with the least value of average friction torque for
the given experimental conditions and is therefore the best one
among the four oils compared.

, The aim of this project is to develop a numerical code in MATLAB to evaluate the performance of
propellant grain of solid rocket motor by accurate regression of grain surface in burnback analysis. A
numerical technique namely Level Set Method (LSM) is used to evolve the grain surface in both 2D
and 3D configurations. In order to reduce computational requirement while evolving 3D grain surface,
an innovative method of quasi-3D has been implemented. In Quasi-3D, 3D grain section is divided into
several 2D cross-sections and then each 2D cross section is evolved using less-demanding (in term of
computational power) 2D Level-Set Method. And in the end interpolation technique is applied to
reconstruct the 3D grain regression from 2D results.
For Internal ballistic calculations, well-established models of 0D-unsteady and 1D-quasi-steady
methods has been implemented. Combining 2D and quasi-3D burnback simulation with 0D-unsteady
and 1D-quasi-steasdy ballistic models, three following cases have been modeled in this research:
1. 2D-grain burnback and 0D-unsteady flow
2. Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D-unsteady flow
3. Quasi-3D grain burnback and 1D-quasi-steady flow
For validation purpose, results of first and second cases, 2D and Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D
unsteady, are compared against reference cases. While the results of 3rd case, 1D quasi-steady flow
model, are analyzed only qualitatively.

, The field of smart autonomous systems has experienced significant growth in recent
years, with the development of robots aimed at assisting humans in various tasks. In particular,
autonomous manipulators have been designed for disaster management and other situations
where humans are inaccessible. This master's thesis presents the design and development of a
mobile manipulator that can autonomously move in cluttered environments and perform pick and
place tasks using 2D SLAM on ROS and 3D camera-based object detection. The proposed
solution addresses the SLAM problem by utilizing the gmapping SLAM algorithm, which allows
the robot to simultaneously locate itself and map its surroundings. The robot is equipped with a
custom-made rover and a 6-DOF robotic arm assembled from ready-made links with joint
servos. The arm is used to perform the pick and place tasks, and the 3D camera is used to
estimate the coordinates of the targeted object, which is then used to control the robotic arm
using inverse kinematics. The localization of the robot is done through 2D pose estimation using
Kalman filter, and the destination position is set via RVIZ. The robot is designed to operate in
indoor environments and can navigate autonomously using the 2D SLAM technique. The project
demonstrates that the robot is capable of detecting the target object's 3D pose, estimating its
coordinates, and accurately moving the robotic arm to achieve the desired pick and place task.
Real experiments and demonstrations of the mobile manipulator's capabilities were performed
using two Arduinos, one controlling the rover's motor and the other controlling the robotic arm's
servos. The results of the experiments confirm the robot's ability to move autonomously and
perform pick and place tasks accurately and efficiently. Overall, the mobile manipulator
designed in this thesis provides a reliable solution for assisting humans in disaster management
scenarios and other inaccessible environments. The use of 2D SLAM, 3D camera-based object
detection, and inverse kinematics control for the robotic arm ensures efficient and accurate
navigation and pick and place operations. The project can be extended to more challenging
environments, such as outdoor and unstructured environments, with the integration of advanced
sensors and algorithms.

, 30% of the world’s agricultural production is lost in post-harvest stage due to the perishability of
agricultural food items. To alleviate this problem, food can be dried to prolong its shelf life.
However, there is a trade-off between product quality and energy cost for most dehydration
methods. The objective of this study was to develop a food drying method that could deliver
product quality that was competitive with highly eco-hazardous and energy intensive methods
while being more energy efficient. To meet this objective, a solar thermal regenerated liquid
desiccant dehumidification system was designed and manufactured. It was connected to a
Microwave-Convection heating chamber to house the food items to be dried. To reduce energy
consumption even further, it was theorized that instead of operating the Desiccant-MicrowaveConvection drying process consistently, the process could be divided into three stages; starting
with high temperature Convection drying, followed by Microwave-Convection drying at a reduced
temperature, followed by Desiccant assisted Convection drying at an even lower temperature.
The Desiccant-Microwave-Convection dryer was experimentally tested to dry potato slices. The
combined process delivered 81.6% shorter drying time compared to Convective Drying and 27.8%
shorter drying time compared to Microwave Drying. The process was also found to consume
66.1%, 10% and 5% lower energy compared to Convective Drying, Microwave drying and
combined Microwave-Convection drying respectively. It was also found to retain 87.8% of the
original food’s color. When the process was divided into three stages with sequentially reducing
temperatures, the cascaded configuration resulted in 22.2% reduction in energy consumption
compared to using Desiccant-Microwave-Convection drying continuously and preserved 92.5%
of the potatoes’ original color, which is comparable to Freeze Drying.
The findings of this study are encouraging and can be used to further develop desiccant based
hybrid drying techniques for a range of food items.

, In inertial Microfluidic field, movement of different particle causes different equilibrium
position in microchannel because of the inertial effects. For particle sorting this is not appreciable.
So with the help of secondary flow (which is at right angle to the primary flow) and drag of
particles, number of equilibrium positions can be reduced and this also help in focusing of the
particles. Amplitude and direction of secondary flow can be influenced by the curved configuration
of the microchannel. In this thesis work, three different size of blood cells (Erythrocyte 9µm,
Lymphocyte 15µm and Monocyte 20µm) were analyzed using passive techniques. We used two
different techniques for the manufacturing of microchannel. First microchannel was produced by
using SLA 3D printing and second channel was manufacture by using laser cutting technique. In
both techniques, there was only one inlet and three outlets. We use three different angles (30, 60
and 90) between outlets for each manufacturing technique. Both channels were studied under
microscope. Among these two channels laser channel gives better results. After taking images with
the help of microscope, image post processing was done by using MATLAB. We can use that
microfluidic device in medical labs as it is easy to use, portable and had low cost.

, Refrigerators being used for domestic purposes are of three types, namely static,
brewed, and no-frost. The aim of this project was to introduce a new compartment in static
refrigerators to enhance the quality and freshness of food present in this compartment. It was
achieved by having control over temperature depending on the needs of the user and needs for
the type of food inside the compartment. There can be two methods to fabricate this special
compartment. One is by using parallel evaporators and other is by using fan and airduct. The
parallel evaporator method is expensive but highly efficient, while air duct is less expensive
and does not compromise enough efficiency, in term of energy consumption and cooling. The
airduct was implanted in the refrigerator and results were taken. The result shows the total time
to reach the target temperature, and time to drop per half degree of temperature. The target was
to set the temperature at any value between 5 to -5 oC. In this project, the minimum temperature
achieved was -1 oC, as the average temperature of evaporator goes to -12 oC, rather than the -
18 oC for most of the domestic refrigerators.

, Blister Packing is a packaging technique in which plastic (PVC Shell) covering the product to be
packed is fused to the cardboard. This equipment is widely used in variety of sectors including
pharmaceutical, electronic and hardware industries. Despite having huge applicability in
packaging domain, these machines are not affordable for small business setup. The goal of this
project is to create portable, cost effective and fundamental blister packing machine which meets
local market requirements. Moreover, its manufacturing should be simple and purely based on
local materials so that any fault during operations can be recovered by operator using local spares.
The concept is based on reverse engineering to develop manual blister packing machine. Blister
Packaging of any product by this machine involves several processes. Placing a wooden or metal
mold under the heating element before adding the shell to the mold is the foremost step. The
product to be packed is placed within the shell and shell is covered with laminated cardboard or
boxboard placed on top of the mold. This machine uses heat to create a seal between the PVC shell
and the cardboard backing. The thickness of PVC Sheet and its type is taken into consideration
while adjusting heating element's temperature. The temperature is kept slightly higher than the
point at which sheets softens. Transmission of heat starts upon manual pressing of hand lever.
Lever is designed in such a way that it applies regular pressure for uniform distribution of heat
with the use of an average person's hand power. In last, hand lever is depressed, and product is
allowed to be cooled at room temperature for a short interval to finally pack the requisite product.

, During the design and development process Mechanical fatigue testing and component life
prediction are critical factors for safe and reliable behavior of component. Before being used in
real-world applications, parts, components, and prototypes must be fatigue tested to determine how
long they will last. A machine setup capable to generate desired load is required for the prediction
of component life under continuous loading or under fatigue. The current work displays a fatigue
testing system for rubber components that is powered by a pneumatic mechanism. Continuous
loading is applied to a rubber component for a predetermined number of cycles, and the resulting
load and distance are calculated. The entire system is further separated into two sections: electrical
and mechanical.
Entire setup comprises of base structure, air compressor, pneumatic cylinder actuator, proportional
servo valve, buck module, load cell transducer, laser distance sensor, signal generator, DC power
supply, load cell amplifier and Data Acquisition Card. Obtained parameters are transferred into an
integrated computer system and Data Analysis is carried out using Lab VIEW.
