	   <p>By Zia, Muhammad Faisal.

                        . 59p.
, Perception of emotion is an intuitive replication of a person’s internal state without the need for
verbal communication. Visual emotion recognition has been broadly studied and several end-toend deep neural networks (DNNs)-based and Machine learning-based models have been proposed
but they lack the ability to be implemented in low-specification devices like robots, and vehicles.
The drawbacks of conventional handcrafted feature-based Facial Emotion Recognition (FER)
methods are eliminated by DNNs-based FER approaches. In spite of that, Deep Neural Network
based FER techniques suffer from high processing costs and exorbitant memory requirements,
their application is constrained in fields like Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and HumanComputer Interaction (HCI) and relies on hardware requirements. In aforementioned study, we
presented a computationally inexpensive and robust FER system for the perception of six basic
emotions (i.e., disgust, surprise, fear, anger, happy, and sad) that is capable of running on
embedded devices with constrained specifications. In the first step after pre-processing input
images, geometric features are extracted from detected facial landmarks, considering the facial
spatial position among influential landmarks. The extracted features are given as input to trainthe
SVM classifier. Our proposed FER system was trained and evaluated experimentally using two
databases, Karolinska Directed Emotional Faces (KDEF) and Extended Cohn-Kanade (CK+)
database. Fusion of KDEF and CK+ datasets at the training level were also employed in order to
generalize the FER system’s response to the variations of ethnicity, race, national and provincial
backgrounds. The results show that our proposed FER system is optimized for real-time embedded
applications with constrained specifications and yields an accuracy of 96.8%, 86.7% and 86.4%
for CK+, KDEF and fusion of CK+ and KDEF databases respectively. As a part of our future
research objectives, the developed system will make a robotic agent capable of perceiving emotion
and interacting naturally without the need for additional hardware during HRI.

                        . 80p.
, One of the initial pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease is cognitive decline and
memory loss by disruption of cholinergic neurons and oxidative brain damage. A
postsynaptic muscarinic receptor blocker, scopolamine impairs cholinergic
transmission and impairs cognition. Here, we observed the physiological processes
underlying Saikosaponin b2's impact on memory deficits in mice that had been given
scopolamine repeatedly. Scopolamine (1 mg/kg) administration for 15 days caused
severe deficits in working and short-term memory in mice, as determined by the
elevated plus maze, Morris water maze, and novel object recognition tests. However,
scopolamine administered mice who were additionally given Saikosaponin b2 did not
experience either deficit. This effect was associated with an increase in antioxidant
enzymes (superoxide dismutase, Glutathione reductase, glutathione s transferase and
catalase), followed by reduction in lipid peroxidation and myeloperoxidase activity.

, Ischemic stroke remains the leading cause of illness and second leading cause of death
worldwide. Previous research has shown that galantamine has neuroprotective properties,
reducing neuronal death and damage in neurodegenerative conditions and improving cognitive
function in Alzheimer's disease patients. The investigation looked into the possible
mechanisms by which this medication could reduce cell death. Wistar rats were subjected to a
temporary 30-minute occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) and given an oral
dose of 5mg/kg for three weeks. After 18 days of surgery, behavioral assessments were carried
out. Galantamine enhanced grip strength, motor function, and muscle strength in rats. Spatial
memory and object recognition examinations revealed cognitive improvements, thus indicating
enhanced cognitive abilities and memory retention. Moreover, rats subjected to galantamine
treatment displayed increased sociability and heightened locomotor activity during social
interaction and open-field assessments. Molecular analysis of galantamine treatment in rats
showed an upregulation of SOD2 expression, suggesting enhanced antioxidant defense, and a
downregulation of TLR4 expression, suggesting a reduction in neuroinflammation, supporting
the anti-inflammatory properties of galantamine. The histological analysis done with H&amp;E
staining of brain tissue revealed enhanced tissue morphology in the galantamine-treated group,
signifying the neuroprotective effects of galantamine. The reduction in neuronal damage,
edema, and inflammatory cell infiltration further supported this observation. The results
demonstrate that galantamine, potentially through the preservation of a functional cholinergic
system, mitigated the impairments caused by stroke in a basic learning and memory test by
decreasing cellular death.

, According to the World Health Organization up to 55 million people have dementia
resulting in concerning socio-economic implications. About 60-80% cases of dementia are
associated with Alzheimer's disease. With all the advances in medicine, there still is no cure.
Blood-brain barrier monitors the entry and exit of nutrients and molecules which makes it
difficult for various drugs and therapeutic molecules to cross it. Carbon dots are made from
glucose to overcome the BBB. Rutin is a naturally existing flavonoid extracted from plants
and has therapeutic effects in neuroprotection. This study aims to improve the effectiveness
of rutin combined with targeted delivery of carbon dots. Carbon dots were loaded with Rutin
to make CD-Rutin, a nano-sized combination with a targeted drug. FTIR, UV-IR, and SEM
analysis have produced positive results regarding the doping of CDs with Rutin.
Administration of CD-Rutin was done in AD-like rat models at eight to twelve months of age.
Alzheimer's was induced in rats with Aluminum Chloride and D-galactose through IP
administration for two weeks. Behavioral tests were performed to check the progression of
the disease. In silico analysis was also done to check ligand-protein interaction to check
variation in the binding of Aβ isoforms with Rutin. Afterward, a single injection of CD-Rutin
(10 mg/kg) was given intraperitoneally as well. Behavioral testing was done after the
administration of the drug. Characterization techniques revealed the successful formation of
CDs and subsequent loading of Rutin onto the CDs resulting in a CD-Rutin combination. In
silico analysis provided strong binding affinities of Rutin with Aβ isoforms affirming Rutin
as a favorable treatment to target amyloid aggregates. 3D configuration showed binding of
Rutin with hydrophobic domains of protein oligomers Behavioral testing provided significant
difference in the treated group with better memory retention and performance in activities
involved in behavioral testing. After behavioral testing, rats were dissected for molecular
analysis including H&amp;E to assess cell degeneration and Thioflavin T staining to assess
amyloid aggregates in the brain tissues. Results provided positive data in terms of cell count
in the cortex. Overall results suggest that memory impairment and cognitive abilities were
significantly improved after injections. The results demonstrate the positive therapeutic
potential of CD-Rutin in Alzheimer's treatment.

, Humans in the modern systems not only interact with other humans but also have to
interact with intelligent machines, robots in form of cyber physical systems to collaborate in
order to carry out different tasks in real working environment. The modern Industrial system
comprises of humans, machines, and cyber systems with a collective aim of optimized
industrial manufacturing objectives, human factors, and ergonomics goals. Different macrohuman factors are considered while designing and formulating human work safety of such
systems and one of the important neuroergonomic factors in is the Cognitive and Mental
Workload (C-MWL). The mental workload (MWL) in the human’s brain is measured with
difference non-invasive neuroimaging techniques. Most of the cognitive load measuring
methods either require massive system protocols like fMRI (functional magnetic resonance
imagining), positron-emission tomography (PET) or strict human anatomical movements
restrictions like electroencephalogram (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). To
address these limitations, fNIRS (functional Near infrared Spectroscopy) is used in this
research to measure the hemodynamic changes in the human brain’s tissues as a measure of
the brain activity.
The brain’s hemodynamic signals are measured using a light weight portable fNIRS
system (P-fNIRSSyst) that is designed to measure relative change in concentration of
chromophores (oxy and deoxy hemoglobin) in brain tissues. In this study a novel variant of
MBLL (Modified Beer-lambert Law) is designed by keeping the previous intensity value as a
reference by taking the average from initial four seconds activity stimuli in optical density. The
four second stimuli average in novel and important in calculation the changes in concentration
of chromophores. This novel variant of MBLL is Fixed Value - Modified Beer-lambert Law
(FV-MBLL). In this research, MWL is measured and classified in different real time working
environments. The two-state cognitive load is measured with fNIRS system and classified
using FV-MBLL using machine learning techniques like k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), support
vector machines (SVM), and artificial neural networks (ANN). The classification accuracies
of FV-MBLL are better than MBLL. The research further explores the classification
capabilities of deep neural networks (DNN) such as convolutional neural network s (CNN) and
Long short-term memory (LSTM) for the first time in assessment and classification of four-
iv
state MWL. The classification accuracies of LSTM outperform not only ML algorithms (SVM,
KNN and ANN) but CNN as well in classification of multi-state MWL. The research
experimental validation is performed using the accuracies with MWL that are further utilized
in neurorehabilitation as neurofeedback to operate bionic systems using Brain Machine
Interface (BMI).

, This research investigates the use of electromyography (EMG) signals for real-time control in rehabilitation applications. Utilizing the Myo armband, we captured EMG signals corresponding to 12 distinct hand and finger movements. We compared the performance of two machine learning classifiers, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Vanilla Neural Networks (VNN), in accurately classifying these movements. LSTM networks demonstrated superior performance, achieving higher accuracy and robustness in signal classification compared to VNN. To address adaptability and reduce training time for new users, we employed transfer learning techniques. Our research also incorporated transfer learning techniques to enhance model performance, leveraging both a broad dataset collected from multiple subjects and a focused dataset from a single individual over an extended period. Our results show that transfer learning significantly improves the adaptability of the system, allowing for quicker and more efficient integration of new subjects into the model. The study further includes statistical analysis to validate the performance improvements, with paired t-tests and ANOVA confirming the significance of our findings. This work highlights the potential of LSTM networks and transfer learning in enhancing the usability and effectiveness of EMG-based control systems for rehabilitation, paving the way for more responsive and adaptable prosthetic devices. The integration of advanced machine learning techniques into EMG signal processing presents a promising avenue for future research and clinical applications.

, Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease leading to cognitive
impairment and memory loss. The presence of amyloid ß deposition and neurofibrillary tangles
remain the neuropathologic criteria for AD diagnosis. The BBB which is necessary for proper
neuronal activity prevents solutes from the bloodstream getting into the brain. Unfortunately,
there is no effective therapy for the treatment of AD due to low drug potency and various drug
delivery issues, such as limited bioavailability and the blood-brain barrier's obstructions.
Recently nanotechnology has demonstrated encouraging advancements in the treatment of AD.
Many different types of nano-carriers have been modified to provide effective new therapeutic
approaches. This study investigated therapeutic effect of Rutin and compared them with those
of Rutin-bound nanoparticles, NCDs-Rutin and CDs-Rutin in AD rat model. AD was induced
in Wistar Han rats using AlCl3 and D-galactose. The rats were then treated with Rutin and
Rutin-bound nanoparticles and the effects were assessed using different parameters. Behavior
assessment showed that NCDs-Rutin gave significant results in MWM, Y-maze and NOR test,
while CDs-Rutin exhibited better result in open field test. Histological analysis using H &amp; E
staining revealed that NCDs-Rutin group prevented brain tissue better than CDs-Rutin and
Rutin group, however, Rutin group had more effective amyloid plaque reduction in ThT
staining. Moreover, molecular analysis of treatment groups showed an upregulation of SOD2
expression, among them NCDs-Rutin and Rutin group showed significant results suggesting
enhanced antioxidant defense. While, CDs-Rutin group showed significant reduction in TLR4
expression, suggesting a reduced neuroinflammation. Proteomic analysis through SDS-PAGE
indicated differences protein expression across the groups. The Rutin-bound nanoparticles significantly outperformed Rutin in terms of efficacy, most likely as a result of their focused
administration and increased bioavailability.

, The human eye continuously perceives information about surroundings to be processed
and stored in memory so that it can be retrieved. Environmental factors may have
positive and negative effects on memory performance and human cognitive processing.
Many studies have addressed the effect of auditory circumstances on spatial tasks and
visual memory performance. However, only a few studies highlighted the cross-modal
interaction between vision for visual cue and touch for training of same visual pattern in
tactile pattern. In addition, very little research has been conducted on the effect of tactile
stimulation towards memorizing visual tasks. The main objective of this study is to
investigate the effect of visuo-tactile stimulation on adult memory. Sixty-two subjects
participated in this behavioral study having normal and corrected to normal vision.
Participants are divided into two groups and each subject goes thorough Mini mental
state examination and Edinburg handedness inventory. The visual assessment task
consists of different shapes along with three-digit numbers. During the memorization
period, visual assessment task was displayed on computer screen and tactile stimulation
was delivered on index finger of the dominant hand of the participant. The participant
was provided with an evaluation sheet containing shapes only. If the shape is paired with
its corresponding number, then it was be considered correct. The p-value &lt; 0.05 in visual
assessment test showed a significant effect of tactile stimulation on visual memory
performance. The findings of this study concluded that participants memorized the object
number pair task better in the presence of tactile stimulation as compared to control/no
stimulation. One of the conclusions of our work is that combing vision and touch sense
may improve cognitive ability and may be provided to people during learning and
remembering visual tasks. For future recommendations, heterogenous sample along with
brain response can be studied.

, Diabetic neuropathy and cognitive impairment are common complications of diabetes,
significantly affecting the lives of millions of people. Finding effective treatments for these
issues remains a critical challenge. In this study, we investigated whether chenodeoxycholic
acid, a naturally occurring bile acid known for its neuroprotective properties, could help
alleviate these complications. We utilized a mouse model of diabetes induced by
streptozotocin. The mice were categorized into three groups; a healthy control, a diabetic
group and a diabetic group that receive treatment with CDCA. The diabetic mice displayed
typical signs of nerve pain, anxiety-like behaviour, and memory problems. However, those
treated with CDCA showed remarkable improvements in all these areas. They experienced
less pain in the hot plate analgesia, exhibited reduced anxiety levels in the open field test, and
demonstrated better memory and cognitive function in the test of Y-maze. Beyond behaviour,
CDCA also had profound effects on the brain. It preserves the structure of neurons in critical
areas like the hippocampus and cortex, which are often affected by diabetic neuropathy. At a
molecular level, CDCA may reduce inflammation by decreasing nuclear factor kappa B
levels, a key marker of inflammation and cell damage. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor
is also increased, a protein essential for nerve growth and repair in the brain, suggesting that
CDCA supports the brain’s natural ability to heal. These results provide a promising glimpse
into the potential of CDCA as a treatment for diabetes-related nerve and cognitive problems.
While more research is needed, the ability of CDCA to protect neurons, reduce inflammation,
and improve cognitive and behavioural outcomes makes it a promising drug for future
therapies aimed at improving the lives of people with diabetes.

, Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can decode not only what users are thinking but also the intensity
of their cognitive effort. However, BCIs have traditionally been constrained to single-task
applications. Multitask learning (MTL) offers a promising solution by enabling BCIs to handle
multiple related tasks simultaneously, enhancing both performance and usability. This study applied
MTL to EEG data from N-back working memory tasks (0-back, 2-back, and 3-back) using openaccess data from 26 participants at Technische Universität Berlin. We developed a novel hybrid
CNN-LSTM-tAPEformer architecture that integrates Convolutional Neural Networks for spatial
feature extraction, Long Short-Term Memory networks for temporal sequence modeling, and
Transformer blocks with specialized attention mechanisms for capturing long-range temporal
dependencies. The proposed model performs dual functions by classifying accurate behavioral
responses while simultaneously measuring cognitive workload across varying task complexity
levels. Notable innovations include the development of Time Absolute Position Encoding (tAPE)
that enhances temporal processing by integrating sinusoidal positional encoding with adaptive
channel-specific encoding to preserve temporal relationships in EEG data. The system incorporates
regional and temporal self-attention mechanisms along with global attention pooling to achieve
enhanced neural pattern detection. Through leave-one-subject-out cross-validation methodology,
the model was trained using data from all participants except one, then evaluated on the excluded
individual to assess cross-subject generalization performance. Findings validate the hybrid CNNLSTM-tAPEformer model's efficacy for practical multi-task learning implementations,
