	   <p>By Ahmad, Haris .

                        . 82p.
, In this thesis, we explore the fluid flow and heat transfer in thin liquid films over an
unsteady stretching surface with viscous dissipation under the influence of an external
magnetic field. To investigate the behavior of this system, we use similarity
transformations with the analytical and numerical solution techniques. Specifically, we
derive the Lie point symmetries of the system of partial differential equations that describes
the flow and heat transfer in a thin liquid layer. A 5-dimensional Lie point symmetry
algebra is derived. We develop new similarity transformations for the given model using a
pair of the admitted Lie point symmetry generators. Arbitrary coefficients are used in the
Lie optimal system and these arbitrary coefficients may be employe to the control the flow
and heat transfer.
By constructing the optimum system of Lie sub-algebras, related invariants, and similarity
transformations, we reduce the number of independent variables in this flow model and
convert the partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations for simplifying
the solution procedure. This conversion requires double reduction, and the resulting
transformations allow us to reduce the model to nonlinear ordinary differential equations.
To examine the proposed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow and heat transfer, we build
analytic solutions for the obtained system of ordinary differential equations using the
Homotopy analysis approach. The results are presented in the form of tables and figures,
which demonstrate how the magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, Eckert number, and
unsteadiness parameter affect fluid velocity, film thickness, and heat transfer. We compare
these changes in velocity and temperature profiles with those previously reported for flow
and heat transfer inside a thin film under the influence of viscous dissipation and an
external magnetic field.
Overall, our findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of fluid flow and heat
transfer in thin films over unsteady stretching surfaces with viscous dissipation and
external magnetic fields. These insights have important practical applications in fields such
as chemical engineering, material sciences, and energy transf

	   <p>By Yasin, Ali .

                        . 159p.
, The aim of this project is to develop a numerical code in MATLAB to evaluate the performance of
propellant grain of solid rocket motor by accurate regression of grain surface in burnback analysis. A
numerical technique namely Level Set Method (LSM) is used to evolve the grain surface in both 2D
and 3D configurations. In order to reduce computational requirement while evolving 3D grain surface,
an innovative method of quasi-3D has been implemented. In Quasi-3D, 3D grain section is divided into
several 2D cross-sections and then each 2D cross section is evolved using less-demanding (in term of
computational power) 2D Level-Set Method. And in the end interpolation technique is applied to
reconstruct the 3D grain regression from 2D results.
For Internal ballistic calculations, well-established models of 0D-unsteady and 1D-quasi-steady
methods has been implemented. Combining 2D and quasi-3D burnback simulation with 0D-unsteady
and 1D-quasi-steasdy ballistic models, three following cases have been modeled in this research:
1. 2D-grain burnback and 0D-unsteady flow
2. Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D-unsteady flow
3. Quasi-3D grain burnback and 1D-quasi-steady flow
For validation purpose, results of first and second cases, 2D and Quasi-3D grain burnback and 0D
unsteady, are compared against reference cases. While the results of 3rd case, 1D quasi-steady flow
model, are analyzed only qualitatively.

	   <p>By Ali, Muhammad Junaid .

                        . 251p.
, This thesis introduces a novel methodology for optimal interface expansion in dynamic
substructuring, focusing on inaccessible and continuous interfaces. Unlike traditional
approaches relying on modal parameters from Frequency Response Functions (FRFs), it
employs a direct frequency-based method targeting interface Degrees of Freedom (DoFs),
bypassing errors linked to modal identification. The System Equivalent Model Mixing
(SEMM) technique is utilized to expand dynamics at the interface by integrating numerical
and experimental models into a mixed model. Coherence is employed as a robust
correlation metric, evaluating both phase and magnitude of FRFs. This research addresses
optimal sensor placement (OSP) for effective expansion, testing nineteen stochastic
metaheuristics categorized into swarm intelligence, surrogate algorithms, and physicsinspired methods to alleviate computational challenges of exhaustive searches. The
Mountain Gazelle Optimizer (MGO) algorithm proved highly efficient for larger systems,
while exhaustive search was effective for smaller cases. Validation involved cantilevered
beam models and experimental setups, demonstrating strong correlation at interface DoFs.
MGO proved to be 49 times faster than exhaustive search in identifying optimal sensor
locations. The proposed methodology showcases practical applicability in achieving
accurate dynamic expansions.

	   <p>By Sultan, Badar .

                        . 107p.
, This study examines the heat and mass transfer in a steady Casson fluid over a
stretching sheet. It considers the behavior of Casson fluid with and without slip velocity
and variable heat flux boundary conditions under the influence of various control
parameters. The mathematical model describing continuity, x-momentum, concentration,
and energy transfer in the fluid is formulated along with necessary boundary conditions.
To simplify the PDEs of this model, a new set of generalized transformations is derived
using the Lie similarity method. A general vector field Lie symmetry generator is extended
twice and applied to the fluid model and subjected boundary conditions, resulting in the
invariance criteria in the form of linear PDEs. This invariance criterion, when applied to
PDEs of the fluid model, yields the invariants, which, when applied to the model, reduce
the number of independent variables, turning the complex set of PDEs into simpler ODEs
while retaining the key physical features of the flow. These transformations, while
satisfying the continuity equation, further reduce one dependent variable, decreasing the
complexity of the system even further.
This system of ODEs is then solved using the homotopy perturbation method. It is
a semi-analytical technique that combines homotopy and perturbation methods to handle
nonlinear problems. A higher-order perturbation series, written in the terms of the
homotopy parameter and dependent variables is inserted in the system, which, during
integration, helps refine the solution. This resulting system is then integrated with modified
set of initial conditions having arbitrary constants. The equations resulting from
integration, when subjected to final conditions, evaluate these arbitrary constant, which
convert the boundary value problem into an initial values problem, which is then solved to
get the solution of model.
Different boundary condition sets are imposed on the considered flow model: one
with slip velocity and variable heat flux, and the other without these conditions. The
response of the velocity and temperature towards these conditions is observed and it is
reported that for boundary conditions without slip velocity and variable heat flux, velocity
increases with permeability and decreases with Casson fluid and magnetic field parameters;
xix
temperature increases with permeability, Prandtl number, radiation parameter and ratio of
Lie control parameters and decreases with Casson fluid and magnetic field parameters; and
concentration increases with permeability, Casson fluid parameter, ratio of Lie control
parameters, and decreases with magnetic field parameter and Schmidt number. For slip
velocity and variable heat flux boundary conditions, velocity increases with permeability
and decreases with Casson fluid, slip velocity and magnetic field parameters; temperature
decreases with permeability, Prandtl number, radiation parameter and ratio of Lie control
parameters and increases with Casson fluid, slip velocity, heat flux and magnetic field
parameters; and concentration increases with permeability, Schmidt number, ratio of Lie
control parameters, and decreases with magnetic field, slip velocity and Casson fluid
parameters. The use of Lie symmetry transformations and homotopy perturbation method
proves to be a practical approach for solving complex fluid problems modeled using nonlinear PDEs, offering valuable insights for optimizing industrial processes like polymer
extrusion, metal coating, and thermal management.

	   <p>By Zubair, Saad .

                        . 86p.
, The purpose of this research is to study the combined effects of Magnetohydrodynamic
(MHD), Marangoni convection, heat generation, thermosolutal transport and chemical reaction
of first order for a fluid system. These flows play a potent role in many applications of realworld such as cooling systems, heat exchangers, chemical and material processing, buildings
and HVAC’s, power generation, food processing, aerospace and automotive, geothermal
systems, thermal energy storage and many more. The equations modeling these flows are
nonlinear partial differential equation which in general are very complex and challenging to
solve.
The considered flow equations are transformed into less complex ordinary differential
equations by using an approach called Lie symmetry transformations. This mathematical
technique helps in the reduction of variables of the system, thereby decreasing complexity of
the system which often results in a set of solvable equations. This reduction of variables yields
nonlinear equations of ordinary type that (in general) do not possess exact solutions, however
computational cost involved in generating approximate solutions for the reduced equations
decreases enormously. Through these solutions a better understanding of the system and the
physical parameters that affect the system is established.
This thesis employs Homotopy Perturbation Method that is an analytical approach for
obtaining analytical approximate solutions for the flow and heat transfer considered by
imposing the said physical constraints. MAPLE is used to develop the code for Homotopy
Perturbation Method and for generating Lie similarity transformations. Using MAPLE, the
reduction is performed, and graphs are obtained showing the influence of various variable
parameters like Prandtl number, Hartmann number, Schmid number, rate of chemical reaction
and the coefficient of heat generation corresponding to the temperature, velocity and
concentration profiles. Lie control parameters are involved in these similarity solutions that are
obtained in this thesis. These parameters are shown to influence the flow dynamics like the
physical parameters. This control characterization of the fluid flow and heat transfer considered
here has not been presented earlier.

	   <p>By Shahid, Fahad .

                        . 74p.
, Thin film flows are important in many engineering processes like coating, cooling, and
extrusion. These flows are usually described by complex equations namely nonlinear partial
differential equations, which come from the laws of mass, momentum, and energy
conservation. In this thesis, an unsteady thin film flow over a stretching surface is studied by
imposing the slip velocity condition along with variable heat flux.
To make these equations solvable, Lie symmetry analysis is used. This method helps to find
transformations that reduce the flow equations into ordinary differential equations. These
simpler equations are then solved using the Homotopy Perturbation Method, which gives
analytical solutions in the form of a converging series.
The study looks at how different physical parameters and numbers such as the unsteadiness
parameter (𝑆), Prandtl number (𝑃𝑟), Casson fluid parameter (𝛽), slip velocity parameters (𝜆)
and the Eckert number (𝐸𝑐) affect the velocity of the fluid, temperature distribution, and heat
transfer rate. The results are shown in graphs for better understanding.
This research provides useful insights into how thin films behave under different conditions
thereby improving the design and performance of systems that use these kinds of flows.
